Literature Text

Months have passed and Laughing Jack found himself lost in (n). He wondered what term to use to describe his feeling for her, because friendship did not seem enough. It was... love, right?  He never knew was love was and never cared to learn what it really was about. He only enjoyed taking away the children of parents that loved them very much.

But right now it was a different story. He always had a burning to desire to make her happy, regardless of how foolish he might look. That was love, right?

Her physical condition worsened and she often looked so sad. It hurt him to see her in so much pain and that he wasn't able to do anything about it. All he could do was give her emotional support.

He was so happy to have met her, he'd never expect to find someone who could make him so cheerful and complete. It was almost like she was made for him... although temporarily only. It pained him to think of losing her soon eventually but it was too late to turn back now. He had not listened to her warning and he would regret this later.

As it happened one day, (n) had gotten so weak she couldn't even walk anymore. Laughing Jack pitied her but as strong as her spirit was, she'd always tell him not to worry. Laughing Jack, however, could never stop worrying about her.

She mostly just laid down and Laughing Jack had to turn her sometimes  to the side so she could spit the blood that was stuck in her throat, avoiding suffocation.

She was lying on his lap, watching the stars in the sky from the window from the capsule of the Ferris wheel.

"The sky is so beautiful...." She swooned.

"... Just like it had been ten years ago..." He added.

"Do you still remember what I taught you ten years ago?"

"Of course! The brightest star you can see is not actually a star but a planet called Venus and the sun is a star, too."

"Good clown." She praised him playfully and Laughing Jack laughed.

"(n)?"

"Hmm?"

"Do you think I'm inlove with you?"

(n) giggled at his question.

"I don't know. You tell me, Laughing Jack."

"I don't know what love is but I think what i feel towards you is love."

"So cheesy."

"Cheesy?"

"Never thought a killer clown could be so cheesy."

"What does my affection have to do with cheese?"

"Oh my god, Jack!" She bursted out in laughter. "Don't make me laugh! It hurts!" She held her tummy.

"I always love to make you laugh even if it hurts you. Your laughter sounds angelic."

"You are so funny, Laughing Jack."

"I still don't get your joke. What do you mean by cheesy?"

"Corny, Laughing Jack, what you're saying is pretty corny."

"I do not understand why you are associating this with food."

She face-palmed.

"Corny or cheesy mean it sounds really awkward and sweet."

"Blimey! Neither corn or cheese taste sweet."

"Hahaha, ow! Stop making me laugh!"

He gently smiled down on her and stroked her cheek. Despite all the pain she was feeling, she was still laughing. She was still having fun. Why can't things stay this way forever?

"I don't know about you, Laughing Jack, but I love you."

He was stunned for a moment and (n) used that chance to rise up and plant a kiss on his lips. That's when he realized that he felt the same way about her. He loved her.

She withdrew her lips and looked deeply into his eyes.

"Thank you for coming into my life, Laughing Jack."

"(n)... Thank you too. For everything."

She huddled back into his lap and yawned.

"You should sleep. It's been a tiring day."

She nodded and gave him one last beautiful smile.

"Good night, Laughing Jack. I love you."

"I love you too, (n). Good night."

She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. Laughing Jack would hold her just like he had done in the past few months and looked up to the sky. He wondered how much time they had left to play around. He wanted to have fun with her forever but sadly, human beings don't exits for very long.

As his eyes were gazing up to the sky, he saw something move in the sky. A bright streak of light flying through a short distance. This must be a shooting star! Laughing Jack had heard that people make wishes when they see one. He surely didn't believe in such a tale but a try wouldn't hurt. His wish was to be best friends with (n) forever.

As he finished thinking of his wish, the shooting star had already disappeared. Would his wish come true? He definitely hoped so.

Slowly, the stars' light started to dim as the first rays of sunlight appeared. It has been more than a hundred years since he had watched the sun rise. It all took too long and Laughing Jack's patience was never long, but at this very moment, he was at peace. He didn't mind anything right now, as long as she was around.

It was already daytime and he had to admit, the night never felt so short before. Just in a few hours, (n) would wake up and they could have fun again.

He waited but the sun was already setting and (n) had still not woken up.

"(n)?"

No answer.

"(n)?" He called her again, this time his voice was a little louder.

Still no answer. He shook her a little, but she still didn't wake up. He tried to listen if her heart was still beating but there was nothing but silence.

"..."

She was gone.

Their time together was now over.

His claws gently caressed her cheeks. She was still warm. That means she only died a little while ago. He knew this would eventually happen he was partially prepared for it. Only partially though.

Did she die happy? Was it painless? Did she die without any regrets? Is she in peace now? Laughing Jack didn't know, he didn't even grasp the whole concept of death but he still hoped he made her happy.  That she lived a worthwhile life.

(n) had such a good soul, she didn't deserve to be sick. But even if she wasn't sick, she would still be human. Their time together would only prolonged but not everlasting. She shouldn't have been human. She shouldn't have been a mortal... she deserved better than that.

He didn't just want to leave her dead body here, he wanted to give her some kind of... "memorial". He carried her bridal style to a place where she could sleep better. Humans usually did this thing called "funeral" when someone died but Laughing Jack wasn't capable of arranging such event for her.

He remembered her drawing where she was lying on a field of white roses. He didn't know any field of white roses nearby but he remembered the field of daisies he passed by before when (n) had brought him the the abandoned amusement park. He decided to head there.

He finally reached the field and laid (n) down on it. The daisies looked just as beautiful as her and Laughing Jack had to admit he had never seen such a beautiful corpse. She looked so peaceful... as if she wasn't even dead but sleeping in his lap as she had done last night....

He laid the doll that looked like her beside her because he thought they looked rather good together. He pulled out the three pictures they had made in the photo booth and placed one of them under her hands on her chest. He decided to keep the other two.

Perhaps it would be best to say something to her.

"Umm... Hello there, (n).... I don't know if you can hear me but... I just wanted to thank you for remembering me after ten years and that you made more special than anyone ever had. Umm... thank you for all the fun we had together and... Wherever you are may be right now... I hope you are happy. I hope your disease isn't bothering you anymore and... I hope you won't forget me. Also remember that... you will always be my best friend."

Saying goodbye was harder than he thought. He looked up to the sky as dark rain clouds assembled themselves. He wondered if he would ever meet her again. Was it possible for him to die someday, too? And if he did, would be in the same place as (n) would?

In a matter of minutes, it started to rain and Laughing Jack decided to leave. For countless times he had been confused about how he was feeling but right now he knew very well what he felt: It was pain. Numbing, hollowing pain.

It hurt to have lost her. He knew he would never meet someone like her again.

As he was walking, raindrops got into his eyes, making his vision blurry. Or were those even raindrops?
We're almost finished! What's going to happen now?
